Tips to stay away from Social Networking Sites

Social Networking Sites are the furore among people. People forget anything and everything just to update their status or change their profile picture. Once you join these sites it is really difficult to resist the temptation to log in. I would not tell anyone to completely quit social sites as they can prove advantageous for some. For instance, a few students use such sites to make study groups and discuss academic issues. But in case you feel that you aren’t making productive use of social sites then consider quitting.

Here are some of my tips to stay away from Social Networking Sites:

  1. Contemplate about the need of Social Networking Sites: Try sitting alone and interrogating yourself. Ask questions like ‘Is my presence in these sites really important?’, ‘How are these sites helping me?’, ‘How will I benefit from leaving these sites?’ etc. Many a times, people realize that their membership in such sites aren’t actually important and that being a member in such sites is actually a hindrance in completing other chores, tasks and responsibilities.
  2. Schedule: If you still think that you can’t completely quit such sites then try planning out how much time you will devote each day in these sites. Try reducing the number of hours or minutes per day with time.
  3. Use parental assistance: In case you are still not able to control yourself then try taking the help of your parents. Inform your parents to change your password periodically and allocate a time each day or week when you will access your accounts. In this manner, you will not be able to log in during other times and will be constantly reminded to stay away from these sites.
  4. Realization: If you are too addicted to these sites then the only option is to ‘realize’ for yourself that you can join such sites and spend ample time once you complete your education, get a good job and fulfill your aspirations. But, in order for you to fulfill your dreams you need to concentrate on your studies now.

In some cases, you may want to check your social site feeds because your friends tempt you to do so. Here are some ways to stop control your activity on these sites:

  1.  Firstly, it is important to apprise your friends of your decision to limit your access to such sites.
  2. If your friends continue to coax you to log in then try not to communicate with them or block them online.
  3. If you feel that the above method is a bit too harsh then try to make them believe that you are not interested in social sites any longer
    • Remove your status, profile pictures etc.
      • In some applications like Whatsapp, you can amend your Privacy settings so that no one can see your profile picture, status, Last seen.
    • Stop liking or following posts and accounts.
    • Do not update your profile picture or status for long. (In case you don’t remove them)
    • Disable sounds and vibrations so that you are not updated about the deluge of notifications.

Above all, always remember to remain steadfast in your decision to stay away from social sites.

    1. Glad to know that you found my vocabulary extraordinary. I believe that using flowering language in regular speech might build up a perspective that I am vainglorious in other’s eyes, so I seldom use such language while speaking.
